The two main ferry routes which are available from the Port of Kirkwall are operated by NorthLink Ferries. The company runs a route to Aberdeen in Scotland with a sailing time of six hours.

A route to Lerwick on the Shetland Islands is operated as well and the duration of the voyage lasts approximately 7 hours, 45 minutes. Orkney Ferries operates the Inter Islands network within Orkneys 70 islands.


Kirkwall to Aberdeen


Northlink Ferries offers three weekly sailings between Kirkwall and the Port of Aberdeen in Scotland. It takes the ferry about six hours to reach Aberdeen from Kirkwall. The vessels which operate the route meet and exceed the most recent safety requirements and provide a high standard of comfort.

Aberdeen port is one of the UK's most active ports, and is the principal trade port for Scotland's north east. The facility handles more than 9,000 visiting crafts and about four million tonnes of freight annually. Kirkwall to Lerwick


Three weekly ferry services are operated by NorthLink Ferries between Kirkwall and the Port of Lerwick on the Shetland Islands. It takes the ferry approximately 7 hours, 45 minutes to reach Lerwick from Kirkwall.

Lerwick is the capital of Shetlands and its only town, which is situated roughly at the centre of the Mainland Island of the Shetlands. Retaining much of its charm, the old fishing harbour has been largely expanded. Lerwick is a vast and active working port. NorthLink Ferries provides connections to Aberdeen and to other ports in Iceland, Scandinavia and the Faroe Islands.
