Orkney's historic capital, Kirkwall, is centrally situated on the main island. Kirkwall is 11 km / 7 miles from Finstown, 24 km / 15 miles from St. Margaret's Hope and 26 km / 16 miles from Stromness. The Hatston ferry terminal is operated by NorthLink Ferries and positioned about 3 km / 2 miles from the centre of town.

Outlets and eateries can be found within walking distance of the port area. The majority of Kirkwall's outstanding shopping is situated in Albert and Bridge Streets.


Tourist offices are provided by the Orkney Tourist Board and can be found in both Stromness and Kirkwall.

The terminal provides adequate passenger facilities including ticket sales and enquiries, public pay phones, and hot and cold beverages vending machines. Physically disabled passengers will find designated toilets and the terminal is accessible by wheelchair. Please note that the facility does not have a left luggage service. Baggage is left at owner's risk.

From the Port of Kirkwall there are three weekly sailings to Aberdeen in Scotland. The duration of the journey, which is operated by NorthLink Ferries, lasts about six hours. Northlink also runs sailings to Shetland's capital, Lerwick, with a crossing time of approximately 7 hours, 45 minutes.
